The
Plan
Day
1 Sunday August 29th.....Okotoks to Kalispell Montana via the Logan Pass. Cross border at
Chief Mountain and take leisurely ride thru Glacier National Park, Montana. 420 kms.
Overnight in Kalispell. A chance to invade Moose's Saloon in Kalispell.
Day
2 Monday August 30th....Kalispell to Missoula (east side of Flathead Lake) to Lochsa Lodge
(90 kms south west of Missoula) just beyond the summit of the Lolo Pass. 300Kms. The Lodge is a complex of rustic log cabins with
various types of accommodation. This is a must-book destination as there are no towns for
quite some distance. http://www.lochsalodge.com/lodge.html
Day
3 Tuesday August 31st....Lochsa Lodge to Coeur d'Alene Idaho via US 12. 390 kms.
Day
4 Wednesday September 1st....Coeur d'Alene to Crawford Bay B.C via the Porthill Border
Crossing. 360 kms.
Recommend
staying at the Crawford Bay Inn Motel. http://www.crawfordbayinn.com
Once
past Creston, we wind our way up the Kootenay Lake Road......one of the 10 best motorcycle
rides in North America.
Day
5 Thursday September 2nd....Early ferry from Crawford Bay to Balfour to Revelstoke B.C.
247 kms. (2 Ferry Crossings make this day longer than the kilometers suggest.) This day
takes us over to Balfour then to Kaslo and over to New Denver on the excellent Highway
31A. Overnight in Revelstoke.
Day
6 Friday September 3rd....Revelstoke to Calgary via Highway 1. 412 kms.
Some
details.....
Once
again we will be dining in fine style at Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives along the way. No
chain restaurants.
Daily
riding distance has been shortened this trip to allow for more exploration time en-route
and to soak up a bit more local culture. Average day will be approx. 400Kms. This allows
lots of time for breaks, gas, photo ops etc. As we discovered last year, the sun gets
pretty low in the sky by about 4pm making riding westward difficult.
Some
accommodation will need to be booked in advance especially day 2 and day 4. I will post
info when I find it.
Notes:
If you do this trip, be prepared to be flexible with the plan especially in the event of
poor weather. Socked in weather could result
in aborted ride.
Ride
is designed for a nice comfortable cruise. Speed limits to be observed. There will be
plenty of stops for photo opportunities and exploration.
Passport
to enter the U.S. is mandatory as of June 2009.
